Fees

I charge £75 an hour for online tutorials.

You will of course find tutors who charge less (or more) than this but bear in mind that having a good working knowledge of the subject, (e.g. a recent Physics graduate), is only part of the skillset needed to be an effective tutor. Indeed, a tutor who simply 'finds the subject easy' is often not the best person to relate to those who find the subject more challenging.  Above all, an effective tutor needs to be able to:

  • communicate abstract ideas to others,

  • offer a full range of explanations and tips to find the most effective for each student,

  • able to point out the most important areas and potential pitfalls in a topic,

  • able to recognise the conceptual errors in a student’s understanding,

  • have a good experience of study skills and revision techniques,

  • have an in-depth knowledge of how the examinations system works

  • be patient and understanding.

These skills tend to only come after many years of teaching experience and are crucial to effective tutoring.

“David is an eminently capable physicist who not only possesses a thorough knowledge and understanding of his subject but, more importantly, he also has the essential skills to convey his knowledge and understanding to his pupils effectively. David appreciates that the concepts and content of his subject can be challenging to pupils of all abilities so he ensures that his teaching is flexible and appropriate. Over the years the consistently high results achieved by all of his pupils is testimony to the academic accuracy, understanding and confidence that they have acquired under David’s guidance."
